What do individuals like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett have in common that made them so successful?

Is it their relentless focus and reading habits? Perhaps, but not everyone who develops laser-like focus and reads a lot automatically finds success.

The answer may not be obvious at first, but if you study the way they went about their professional lives, 4 broad factors stand out:

  • They adopted the right mindsets.
  • They were focused and took consistent action.
  • They were great learners who also enjoyed the benefit of having great mentors.

As we go through the different stages of life, we progressively take on more – more objects, burdens and responsibilities, fears and doubts, emotional baggage, expectations of others, social norms, wants and needs. These things effectively weigh us down, oftentimes without our even realizing it.

At the same time, the pace of change brought about by technology has us all gasping for air. The minute we get used to something, we are forced to learn something new, lest we get left behind. At work, we are also being tasked with multiple projects that have to be completed at increasingly shorter intervals. Clients pushing for work to be completed overnight are now the norm rather than the exception.

This twin problem of too much and too fast is not about to slow down. On the contrary, all indications are that it is only accelerating.

The following statistics are symptomatic of living and working in these times:

● More than 40% of individuals don’t know what they want in life. These are the lost.

● More than 90% of individuals who know what they want, never go about achieving them. These are the stuck.

● More than 80% of individuals report being stressed, overworked or anxious. These are the overwhelmed.

● Most people who become competent in a particular role, never go on to achieve mastery in their fields. These are the underachievers.

In fact, some of you might feel like you’re all of the above at the same time.

You are not alone. It’s easy to feel lost, stuck or overwhelmed in an increasingly difficult to navigate world. It’s also hard to achieve mastery when your focus is being pulled in a hundred different directions by ‘shiny object syndrome’.
